Spore Creature Creator 2-D set free in your browser
September ' ' 17 ' ' 2009 @ 01:53 AM

Maxis has launched a Flash-based browser version of the Spore Creature Creator that mimics the customization found in the retail game fairly closely. Only, y'know, in 2D. All 250 parts found in the 3D creator are available and there's even the option to import creatures from millions found in the Sporepedia.

The app is promoting the impending October 6 release of Spore Hero on Wii (and Spore Hero Arena for DS), but, even if you're not juiced about either game, it's great for creating loving, extremely flattering versions of your friends, family and co-workers -- which must then be placed on their Facebook feeds, of course.

Try your skill at landing a plane on Hudson River - Game: Hero on the Hudson
February ' ' 03 ' ' 2009 @ 12:56 AM

"Hero on the Hudson" challenges players to steady a plane nosediving toward the busy river. In "Double Bird Strike," the goal is to evade flocks of birds -- a suspected cause of the US Airways jet's near disaster on January 15.

Both are free online games created by units of MTV Networks, a division of Viacom Inc. Free games.

Players can try to emulate the skill of pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, who won acclaim for his smooth emergency landing on the Hudson River that saved all 155 people aboard.

"Hero on the Hudson" has been played more than 1.4 million times since it was launched on January 21, said Kate Connally, spokeswoman for its creator AddictingGames. Average success takes three tries.

"If you land it correctly like the pilot did, then the passengers come out and cheer on the wing," she said. "The payoff is the joy of having saved all the passengers."

The plane sinks with burbling sounds if you fail.

Super Mario Fusion: Mario Meets His "Doom"
January 27 2008 @ 02:51 AM

You've seen the Mega Man level. You've seen the Halo level. You've even seen Mario enter the gut of a colossal sea monster.

Now Mario ventures to the Demon Realm to take on the creatures of the DOOM universe!

This level is called "Tower of Babel", named after E2M8 of the original DOOM. It is a very long level, ending with a boss fight with none other than the Cyberdemon!

Many of the graphics are from various Castlevania games, provided by Obreck2, who worked on a Castlevania fangame in Game Maker.

This level also has an all-original enemy, a flaming eyeball, made by TheRealSpiderMew. He will be a prominent contributor to the Super Mario Fusion project.

The other big new feature is a preliminary Warp Zone and multiple World Map system.

And to make things clear, World 4 will have levels based on Castlevania and Ghouls & Ghosts in addition to DOOM-based levels.

Bully Video Game Draws Fire
August 11 2006 @ 11:37 PM

Its latest video game has not even come out yet, but Rockstar is already the center of controversy over Bully, a game that will put players in the shoes of the new kid at a school with a Latin motto meaning "dog-eat-dog."

"As a mischievous schoolboy, you'll stand up to bullies, get picked on by teachers, play pranks, win or lose the girl, and ultimately learn to navigate the obstacles of the worst school around, Bullworth Academy - a corrupt and crumbling prep school with an uptight facade," Rockstar says in its overview of the game.

The main character is Jimmy Hopkins, a teen who was expelled from several schools and "left to fend for himself after his mother abandons him at Bullworth to go on her fifth honeymoon. Jimmy has a whole year at Bullworth ahead of him, working his way up the social ladder of this demented institution of supposed learning, standing up for what he thinks is right and taking on the liars, cheats and snobs who are the most popular members of the student body and faculty."

The Miami-Dade School District has banned Bullyand a U.K. Web site that addresses bullying issues is calling for a ban well ahead of the anticipated holiday-season release of the video in the United Kingdom. The site, Bullying Online, called for the ban after Rockstar released a short demo this week.
