How do you rate a programmer, even better rate yourself to other programmers if you are a programmer ( 1971 views )

Me a programmer and I know JavaScript, PHP, Java, C, C++, VB, Ruby, Perl. Enough of me What about you. How many languages do you know.

So what makes you or me a good programmer.

- Is it the number of programming languages mastered and can be used with fluency.

- Is it the applications created with these languages.

- Is it that the applications created with the languages you know are liked by the end-users.

- Is it the applications are better from what others have created.

- Is it the logic behind the coding or way the code is written.

- Is it the UI, well for one thing. The credit for the UI has to be given to graphic designers

- Speaking of graphics, could one be a programmer and be an expert in graphics. That would be great because that person would do 2 jobs in one or will have a good understanding when coding as it will be easy on the graphic designer.

Paul Says:
i think the most important thing is the quality of the final product.. whatever that may be. And lots of programmers are good at design.. a lot of the best software comes from people like this...
Jonathan Says:
It seems like the modern-day programmer is finding its way into a new multidisiplinary role. We must become software engineers, computer scientists, designers, and mathematicians. I guess it all depends on what domain you are in, but I think a true guru programmer would have to exemplify all of the qualitities that you listed, not some subset. For example if you are doing games programming, you still want to have the skills to produce graphics in Photoshop and 3d modelling software. Even if you cannot produce good content, you have to at least have a good understanding of the process your artists are using to create good content. Sometimes I think of this more as "an appreciation" of the other jobs needed to make a complete product. You don't have to be a master of that skill yourself, but you must have an understanding and appreciation of what that master is doing.
Dan Says:
Understanding that a programming language is just a tool, and the way you use it makes the difference. my 2c.
