One of the coolest things about the A380s onboard video system is the realtime view it displays of the plane in flight. Theorem captured the takeoff, and we shot this video that shows the view from the Tailcam at the landing at SFO.

RoyBatty Says:
Why do people clap after a takeoff? Bajingjing Says:
Because they're unaware that the pilot's job is to fly the plane, and essential parts of that task involve taking off and landing. It would be worth clapping if the person flying the plane was actually a burger flipper who had never flown a plane before - that would be worth the standing ovation you always seem get in the US. UUizard Says:
I have flown 100s of 1000s of kilometers in my time including the USA and I have never heard people clap a take off before - how weird is that? Clapper Says:
I clap because, after an 8-hour flight locked in a tiny flying tincan with 200+ people, I am happy to finally get where I am going. TheKid Says:
Isn't it against regulations to be using anything electronic (i.e. video camera) during takeoff and landing?! Jacob Says:
The reason for turning off all electronics is a blanket measure to make sure that anything that has a wireless transmitter is turned off during takeoff and landing.
This isnt to say that any single device could interfere with the communications or controls on the plane, but if, say, all 600 people on the plane had their cell phones on, you now have a HEAVY heavy concentration of radio transmission, and the likelihood of interference increases.
Industry Secret: The pilots leave their cell phones on all the time. Below 10K feet they get service and make calls all the time. Joey Jo Jo Says:
i've been on hundreds of flights and never once heard any clapping. is this a non-domestic carrier? Joey Jo Jo Says:

No american carriers fly the A380. this was likely a load of folks heading to australia or singapore PBK Says:
They were clapping as it was the maiden voyage of the plane in the US... Jak10 Says:
Why do they clap after a takeoff?
That's stupid. I guess some arabs was on board, and they made it without blowing up so everyone clapped? Nate Says:
Clapping usually doesn't happen in Western or developed Asian countries. However, in the former Soviet Union and SE Asia other than Singapore (here's looking at you Uzbekistan and Indonesia!) people clap and it's well justified. In the Republic of Georgia everyone and their mum are crossing themselves during takeoff and landing. Jeffrey Says:
Yeah I believe the clapping for this is related to the special even status of this flight. However, I remember many years ago on international flights between the US and Europe that clapping was very common after the landing at our destination. Especially if it was a smooth landing. I dunno, maybe just a way of thanking the flight crew (flight deck and cabin crews) for a good flight. Of course this was also back in the days before they nickled and dimed us for everything as well. Snork Says:
Errr...they're clapping because they're excited for their first flight of the biggest passenger plane in history?
I know I'll clap.
@Jeffrey
Yeah, man, flying used to be considered something special. I wish it was still like that. You felt one with your fellow passengers, each on their own journey to locations unknown... Ph Says:
well some people clap and some don't! so what!? your comments saying that this is stupid is very arrogant...sounds very american actually, this attitude to judge everyone... |
