There's a short but interesting article here about how public interest in Tiananmen Square has renewed seemingly as a direct result of Chinese officials trying to deny that it happened. I think that shows the power of the internet and the ability for people to readily access information. It's hard for governments to rewrite history.

I was in Shanghai for a over a week during the demonstrations in that city and left the night before the incident in Tiananmen. I had only a vague idea of what was goin on; but one incident was so powerful and totally amazing to me that I can still recall it vividly. The streets and sidewalks were shoulder to shoulder with demonstraters and it was impossible for our bus to cross this broad avenue. A few young people began to clear our way and as our bus edged into the middle of the road; this massive crowd seemed to swell with energy at the knowledge that there was a bus of Americans. Its hard to describe, but it seemed like there was this wall or wave of emotion that swept towards us. It was so powerful that I was shocked, I had never experienced anything like it. @Mikel The tank Commander is never the first tank in the column, he is either last or in the middle in order to protect him from harm, he wouldn't have anything to do with a decision like this unless the soldier in the tank radioed the Commander asking for orders.
