| 2 Things I can do in windows and not in linux ( 1687 views ) |

I have tried installing RedHat and Fedora 3/4/5 on my PC, yes it has installed perfectly.
1. After installation I find that I cannot get the modem drivers on the net.
2. Obtain the VGA drivers, since my monitor is a LCD it does not take up the generic type too + the screen size. Now I cannot use a 21" with a 800x600 size.
These 2 points are quite enough for me to move to windows again. |

Joe Says:
Then clearly Linux is not for you. There are no modems or LCD monitors that won't work with Linux, however it being FREE, and COMMUNITY SUPPORTED, you do sometimes have to put in a little effort to get things working. If you can't be bothered to do that, then go back to windows. Nikesh Says:
Can you make you modem work on windows without the drivers? why you expect that LINUX can work without the driver, Thanks to the modem vendor to provide the driver for windows, does your vendor provide the driver to Linux? why don't you ask for Linux driver from your vendor.
I feel windoz is better to you, enjoy crash and virus :) Tors10xx Says:
I had a bit of trouble getting the proper resolution to work for my monitor. I ended up editing the Xorg.conf file(i think). You monitor settings are saved in the /etc/X11(or whatever xwindows you've got going)/Xorg.conf there might be more folders in there, but I think that is where I found mine.
You are looking for a list of resolutions. They will be side by side in quotes. All you have to do is add the desired resolution to the list, save, and restart X (or reboot). That should get the monitor part working.
I haven't had a need to use a modem, so I'm not sure what is involved in getting it to work.
Then again, it really comes down to do you want to put the work in.
You might want to try a different version. I personally like Debian, but I have had better luck with hardware detection with Ubuntu. I used to use Fedora, but apt-get is better than Yum to me, and everything works properly without spending hours chasing dependencies...
